Double-digit global growth
Renewables were the only energy category that had double-digit global growth over the last decade. In perspective, in 2009 the world consumed 8.2 exajoules of renewable energy. By 2019, this amount had nearly quadrupled to 29.0 exajoules.
Renewable energy continued its rapid growth rate in 2019, increasing globally by 12.2% compared to 2018. During the last decade, renewable energy consumption has grown at an average annual rate of 13.7%.
